DESIGN BRIEF
The whole house had its entire internals removed, leaving an empty shell. It was then a blank canvas for reconstruction. This project was an exacting, architect led, design, driven by a client with a passion. The stairwell wall was designed to be a monolithic, continuous, three story wall, which had the staircase ‘floating’ off it. It had to be a main feature for the rest of the house to coalesce around in this extensively renovated East End townhouse.
challenges
The stairwell was coated with a custom lime plaster finish utilising aggregates that gave a texture that could, subsequently be burnished on the high spots. The relief of the texture had an iridescence which caught the light from the skylight beautifully and gradually changed the further down through the house as it went. The challenge was in having to complete strips of the specialist finish, prior to the installation of the ‘floating’ staircase, which then had to be finished following the completion.
DETAIL
Custom, iridescent plaster finish, created specifically for the client. It extends up three floors of the house and is visible in the stairwell from each floor, giving a slightly different effect due to the changing light.
